Delhi, 16th December 2022: The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has sent notices to online sites Flipkart and Meesho for violations related to the sale of acid. The CCPA has directed them to give a detailed reply within seven days. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has cracked down on violations of consumer rights.

Notices have been sent to e-commerce companies Flipkart and Meesho for violating rules related to the sale of acid on their platforms. The notice comes after reports that the accused in the recent acid attack on a girl in Delhi’s Dwarka had bought acid from Flipkart.

The Delhi Commission for Women on Thursday issued notices to the two e-commerce firms for allegedly allowing the sale of acid on its platform. Earlier, the Delhi Police had also issued a notice to Flipkart after it found that the acid was bought from there.

Non-compliance with the directions of CCPA’s notice by these e-commerce entities will be strictly dealt with, as per the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.

The ministry said that on checking the online sale of acid by CCPA, it was found that Meesho is also selling acid on its platform. This violates the directions of the court as well as the advisory issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs. There is widespread resentment among the people regarding the acid attack on a teenager. People have also questioned the availability of acid in the markets despite the ban.
