CII’s IPCON 2017 to drive National IP Policy Agenda in collaboration with Indian Patent Office towards creation, protection and enforcement of IP

Mumbai – Government of Maharashtra to partner with CII to set up IP facilitation, said Aseem Gupta, IAS Principal Secretary, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Development. He was speaking at the Premiere Edition of IPCON 2017 – CII IP SUMMIT : CHANGING IP LANDSCAPE in INDIA organized by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in Mumbai.

Mr Aseem Gupta also added that, Innovation need not be tied up to start-ups and vice versa. Without embracing IPR, India’s new economy will not take off. The question is how do SMEs get resources for getting IP Protection. We need to impart knowledge, hand-hold them especially Start-ups. Mr Gupta also referred to signing a Non-Disclosure Agreement and why is it important for start-ups. “We have to make them aware of their legal rights” averred Mr Gupta. He invited suggestions from Industry to improve Maharashtra’s Start up and Innovation Policy.

CII’s IP Summit , IPCON 2017 is an initiative to drive National IP Policy Agenda in collaboration with Indian Patent Office towards, creation, protection and enforcement of IP, said Mr O P Gupta, IAS Controller General of Patent, Design & Trademarks, Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Govt of India. He enlightened the audience about how the Government is taking the IP education and awareness program right to the schools and universities. He said, NITI Aayog has identified schools where IP tinkering labs are set up for students to learn about IP. NCERT has been roped in to include IP in the school syllabus. Mr Gupta, also shared the duration of granting Trademarks and Patents to Indian Companies have reduced considerably. This will encourage companies to file more patents and protect their innovations.

The inaugural session was presided by Mr K Nanda KumarConvenor, CII Maharashtra state Panel on Entrepreneurship Development & SME’s & Chairman & Managing Director, Chemtrols Industries, who presented key insights on the current IP filing scenario and the need for enforcing contracts to make India climb up the Ease of Doing Business Index.

The other panelists on the inaugural panel were MrMehdi Sheikerz, Partner, Staas & Halsey LLP, USA, Mr K Pradeep, Managing Director, ProdyoVidhi and Dr Saugat Mukherjee, Regional Director, CII, Western Region.

The audience were witness to intense panel discussions, technical presentations and interaction with Industry captains who deliberated on the challenges and opportunities for Companies embracing IP for their innovations.
