Pune 15th July 2023: The official data of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) show a remarkable decline in the stray dog population in the city in the last five years. However, this does not seem to be affecting the incidents of dog bites reported in the city limits as the cases of dog bites continue to increase with every passing year.

According to officials, in 2018, the estimated population of stray dogs was 3,15,000, whereas in 2023, it has reduced to 1,79,940, marking a decline of 42.87% over the span of five years. However, the decrease in the stray dog population in the city does not seem to affecting the dog bites incidents.

Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has observed a consistent increase in dog bite cases in recent years. In 2022, the PMC reported the highest number of dog bite cases, reaching 16,569. This upward trend has continued in 2023, with the civic body recording 7,484 dog bite cases until May this year.
