Pune, 10th March 2026: The trailer of Dhurandhar: The Revenge has generated massive online buzz ahead of its release, reviving discussions around the blockbuster Dhurandhar that dominated Indian cinema after hitting theatres on December 5, 2025.
Directed by Aditya Dhar and starring Ranveer Singh, the film became one of the biggest commercial successes in recent years, grossing more than ₹1,300 crore worldwide while simultaneously attracting multiple controversies.
The original film quickly gained popularity through strong word-of-mouth promotion, drawing large audiences to theatres across India and overseas. Its commercial performance placed it among the highest-grossing Indian films of recent times. However, its success was accompanied by legal and social controversies that kept the film in the headlines for months.
One of the major controversies involved a dialogue delivered by Sanjay Dutt that was perceived as offensive by members of the Baloch community. The dialogue sparked protests and led to legal petitions. Following the matter, a high court directed the filmmakers to mute the line in subsequent screenings. A revised version of the film was released in theatres from January 1, 2026.
Another issue emerged after critics and commentators alleged that the film’s central character appeared to be loosely inspired by late Indian Army officer Major Mohit Sharma without formal consent from his family. The allegation triggered debate about ethical standards in filmmaking when real-life personalities are believed to inspire fictional characters.
The film also faced piracy challenges shortly after release. Illegal copies surfaced on several websites, prompting the producers, including Jio Studios, to initiate legal action against piracy platforms in an effort to safeguard the film’s intellectual property.
Internationally, Dhurandhar faced restrictions in several countries. The film remains banned in Pakistan and multiple Gulf nations including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain. Reports suggest that authorities in these countries objected to the film’s political themes, describing them as sensitive.
Despite the controversies, audience interest remains strong. The trailer of the sequel, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, has crossed 55.3 million views within just three days of its release on YouTube, reflecting significant anticipation among fans. The sequel is scheduled to release in Indian cinemas on March 19, 2026.
Industry observers say the strong trailer response indicates that the franchise continues to generate high public curiosity, even as debates around its themes and inspirations persist.
