From Controversy To Success: ‘OMG 2’ Overcomes Censor Board Hurdles, Nets 9.5 Crores On Release
Mumbai, 12th August 2023: The movie “OMG 2,” starring Akshay Kumar, Yami Gautam, and Pankaj Tripathi, made an impressive debut at the box office. It garnered a warm and positive response from both fans and critics, as reflected in its box office earnings. The directorial work of Amit Rai managed to amass more than 9 crore rupees on its opening day, as reported by Sacknilk. According to the same source, “OMG 2” exhibited strong performance during its initial day in theatres, resulting in a net collection of around 9.5 crore rupees in India.
The report further forecasts that the film is likely to accumulate over 14 crores on its second day. After encountering a delay of over two weeks due to modifications demanded by the Censor Board, “OMG 2” ultimately received clearance with 27 alterations. The film was granted an “Adults only” certificate. Continuing the narrative from the successful 2012 film “OMG- Oh My God!”, this satirical comedy features the renowned Arun Govil, known for his role in Ramayan.
In the storyline, Pankaj Tripathi portrays the character of Kanti Sharan Mudgal, a devoted follower of Lord Shiva, whereas Akshay Kumar assumes the role of a divine messenger. The narrative revolves around Kanti Sharan Mudgal’s legal battle against his son’s school and those responsible for imparting misinformation about sex to his son. The character even files a case against himself for failing to support his child. In court, he encounters Kamini (Yami Gautam), a lawyer. Throughout the film, Kanti emphasizes the importance of sex education.
The film’s script stands out as its most potent element. Director Amit Rai refrains from unnecessary additions, concentrating solely on the subject of sex education. The film tackles this topic with sensitivity, resulting in a compelling and thought-provoking work. While the second half might come across as didactic due to the film’s objective of promoting conversations about sex, it succeeds in advocating that discussing sex is acceptable, provided it is approached with care.
The review also asserts that “OMG 2” strongly argues against being exclusively labelled as an “Adults only” film. It emphasizes that the movie doesn’t aim to desensitize the subject matter but rather aims to foster open discussions surrounding sex education.
