Pune, 2nd April 2025: With the onset of summer, the arrival of Java plum (Jambhul) has begun in Pune markets from Sawantwadi in Konkan. Currently, retail prices range between ₹350 and ₹400 per kg, but they are expected to decline once supplies from Gujarat enter the market in the next ten to fifteen days.

Season and Demand of Java Plum
The Java plum season typically begins in the second week of April, and its demand increases with the rising summer heat. Known for its cooling properties and health benefits, Java plum is cultivated extensively in Konkan, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Shrigonda taluka in Ahilyanagar district.

According to Pandurang Supekar and Mauli Ambekar, traders from Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard, the first batches of Java plum from Sawantwadi have reached the Pune market. With the Baroda region in Gujarat being a major producer, a significant drop in prices is expected once the Gujarat harvest begins.

Uses and Market Trends
Java plum is not just sold as fresh fruit but is also widely processed into syrups and ice creams. “Towards the end of the season, prices decrease, and processing industries purchase Java plum in bulk,” said Pandurang Supekar, a trader at Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard.
With Pune’s rising temperatures, the availability of Java plum is set to increase, making it more accessible to consumers while benefiting farmers and traders alike.
