Mumbai, 12th July 2025: In a significant political development, Jayant Patil has stepped down as the state president of the Nationalist Congress Party – Sharad Pawar (NCP-SP), ending his seven-year tenure at the helm. The party has named senior leader Shashikant Shinde as his successor, with Shinde set to officially assume the role on 15th July.

Patil’s resignation follows his earlier request to party chief Sharad Pawar to relieve him from the post, citing the need to give opportunities to new leadership. During the party’s foundation day event on 10th June, Patil publicly expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him over the years and emphasized the importance of bringing fresh faces into key positions to drive the party forward. His departure comes at a time when the NCP-SP is preparing for crucial upcoming elections and seeking to consolidate its base amid internal challenges.

Shashikant Shinde, a seasoned politician and former Water Resources Minister of Maharashtra, has been chosen to lead the party’s state unit. Shinde, currently serving as a Member of the Legislative Council and Chief Whip of the Sharad Pawar faction, is known for his grassroots connect and organizational skills. He has represented both Jawali and Koregaon constituencies as MLA and is recognized for his experience in labor and rural issues.

Reacting to his appointment, Shinde thanked Sharad Pawar and senior leaders for their confidence, stating he would focus on strengthening the party and addressing pressing issues such as unemployment and agrarian distress. He also highlighted the party’s commitment to nurturing new leadership and adapting to the evolving political landscape.

Patil’s resignation and the subsequent leadership change come at a pivotal moment for the NCP, which has faced internal divisions following the split between the Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar factions. The party is now looking to rebuild and energize its cadre under Shinde’s leadership as it heads into a challenging electoral season.
