LOYOLA FOOTBALL CUP: The Bishops School roll into two semifinals, J.N Petit H.S break St. Vincent’s HS hearts in Under-14 section
Pune, 27th July 2023: The Bishops School, Camp made the most of the day winning both their quarterfinals, while J.N Petit Technical H.S handed St. Vincent’s H.S a shock defeat and spoil their day of making it to two semifinals in the Loyola Football Cup powered by Tata Autocomp at the Loyola H.S ground, Pashan here on Thursday.
The tournament, organised by the Ex Loyola Students Network (ELAN) and Loyola High School, Pune eventually at day-end had Blue Ridge Public School, The Bishops School, Camp and St. Vincent’s H.S make the last-4 of the Under-16 section and likewise in the Under-14 section it was J.N Petit, The Bishops School, Camp and hosts Loyola H.S book their berths.
The Under-14 section saw the upset of the day! J.N Petit Technical H.S fought hard to upset the applecart of St. Vincent’s H.S 4-3 via the tie-breaker, while The Bishops School, Camp scored a 5-0 win over PICT Model School.
The JN Petit-St. Vincent’s H.S quarterfinal encounter was exciting. Param Bhargav (3rd) struck early for St. Vincent’s, but J.N Petit H.S fought back via Daksh Pillay (35th) to end regulation-time at 1-1.
In the tie-breaker, J.N Petit H.S netted via Adyan Shaikh, Daksh Pillay and Yug Chowhan, while St.Vincent’s H.S had Ethan Lobo and Johan Ambat gain success.
The highlight of the win was JN Petit H.S goal keeper Om Darekar who saved the attempts of Naitik Gupta and Devrath Ponnam after Param Bhargav missed.
On the other hand, St. Vincent’s H.S ‘keeper Rajveen Mhaske saved Hiten Shendge, but the final St Vincent’s H.S kick saw Yug score.
In the third quarterfinal, The Bishops School were led by hat-trick hero Joshua Songate (16th, 20th, 24th) and a goal each by Divyan Kaushik (10th) and Arjun Deshpande (44th) to blank PICT Model School.
In the last match of the day, Loyola H.S fought off Vidya Valley School 5-1. An early goal by Vidya Valley School via Siddhan Jadhav (4th) pushed Loyola H.S to find the equalizer which Vedant Gupta (10th) delivered (1-1). At the stroke of half time Rudra Shelar (30+1) headed home to give Loyola H.S a 2-1 lead.
In the second half, Vedant Kamble (42nd) made it 3-1 for the hosts. Four minutes later Rudra Shelar (46th) headed home a Vedant Gupta free-kick (4-1). Vedant (47th) made it 5-1 capatalising on a Lavya Ashrani pass and getting past the opponent ‘keeper.
In the Under-16 section, The Bishop’s School, Camp and St. Vincent’s H.S rolled into the last-4 with contrasting wins.
In the third quarterfinal of the section, The Bishop’s School fought off the challenge of Vidya Bhavan 2-1. The Bishops School opened the scoring when Iqbal Shaikh (24th) found the net. Vidya Bhavan fought back to level scores (1-1) through Dhairya Kore (50th). However, a quick reply by Aaran Sidhwani (54th) for The Bishops School H.S proved match-winner.
In the fourth quarterfinal, St. Vincent’s H.S were involved in a nine-goal encounter before winning 7-2 against Millennium National School.
The match began with Millennium School going up (1-0) through Ved Patil (6th). St Vincent’s struck back through Aryan Suryavanshi (8th) to make it 1-1.
Thereafter. St. Vincent’s dominated scoring with Aryan (37th) adding another, Deo Kamble (20th, 40th, 45th) added three, then Shounak Dhapte (22nd) converted a penalty kick and Neil Sengupta (25th) added one more.
Millennium School reduced the margin further when Aditya Kamble (53rd) netted to sign off the day..
In a late match, Blue Ridge Public School downed The Kalyani School 5-1. Aided by a three-goal effort by Agrimm Singh (16th, 26th, 30th) and a goal each by Arjun Datir (18th) and Aditya Deshmukh (60+2) Blue Ridge powered home. The Kalyani School had Adhyant Bhargava (23rd) pull one back
