New Delhi, 3rd March 2025: The Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj concluded as the largest human gathering ever recorded, attracting over 66 crore devotees and driving an estimated ₹3 lakh crore (USD 360 billion) in transactions.

Beyond its spiritual significance, the event emerged as a major economic engine, benefiting Uttar Pradesh’s economy with an estimated revenue of ₹54,000 crore and creating direct and indirect employment for around 60 lakh people.

The Maha Kumbh has not only reaffirmed faith and unity but has also reshaped Prayagraj’s economic landscape, setting new benchmarks for large-scale religious gatherings.

The Maha Kumbh 2025 has demonstrated the potential of large religious events to drive economic growth. The event saw active participation from all 13 Akharas, with millions taking the holy dip at the Sangam.

The Kinnar Akhara, associated with the Juna Akhara, became a major attraction, symbolizing inclusivity in spiritual traditions.

Swami Avdheshanand Giri Ji Maharaj, Acharya Mahamandaleshwar of Juna Akhara, said, “Mahakumbh is not just a gathering; it is a divine call to humanity to cleanse the mind and soul. The presence of millions of devotees reaffirms our faith in Sanatan Dharma”.

To facilitate financial transactions for pilgrims, 16 banks established branches within the Mela premises, handling transactions worth ₹37 crores.

A State Bank of India (SBI) official noted a huge volume of cash deposits, indicating that people wanted to keep their money safe while participating in religious festivities.

The Uttar Pradesh government invested ₹7500 crore in improving Prayagraj’s infrastructure, including flyovers, roads, and underpasses, with ₹1500 crore specifically for Maha Kumbh arrangements. Improved connectivity, including increased flights and special trains, ensured smooth travel for millions of devotees.

Dr. Arvind Mishra, an economist at Allahabad University, commented, “Mahakumbh 2025 has demonstrated that large religious events are not just about faith but also about economic growth. Small businesses, vendors, and even large corporations have seen a significant boost in revenue”.

While the state government estimates the event could generate over $2 trillion in revenue for the nation, some economists are sceptical.

Sunil Sinha, an economist and former chief economist at India Ratings, noted that most pilgrims come from lower-income backgrounds and may not have significant spending.

Despite differing opinions on the exact figures, the Maha Kumbh 2025 has undoubtedly provided a substantial boost to the local and regional economy, leaving behind a legacy of faith, unity, and economic resources.
