Pune, 17th January 2025: The Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of Pune has mandated that private individuals, event managers, and professional photographers must obtain formal police permission before operating drone cameras in the district. The directive requires users to notify the local police station at least seven days in advance and secure approval from the concerned police officer.

This decision stems from growing concerns over security risks associated with drones in the district, which hosts critical infrastructure, religious sites, dams, and central institutions. Authorities have warned of the potential misuse of drones for surveillance or terrorist activities. Recent reports of drones flying at night in areas such as Daund, Baramati, and Shirur talukas have sparked fear among residents, further emphasizing the need for regulation.

The ADM’s order also highlighted the possibility of illegal activities, including sand smuggling, being facilitated by drones. Additionally, the risk of theft and other crimes through drone surveillance has prompted the enforcement of stricter measures.

Violations of the order will result in penal action under Section 233 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
