Pune, 26th May 2025: With the sharp rise in cybercrime cases and an increasing backlog of pending investigations, MLA Hemant Rasane has urged the Maharashtra Chief Minister and Home Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, to establish one dedicated cyber police station in each of Pune’s five police circles.

In a letter to Fadnavis, Rasane highlighted the growing severity of cybercrime in the city. He referenced a recent case where Pune Police busted a fake call centre in Kharadi that defrauded American citizens of lakhs of rupees by threatening ‘digital arrest’ using gift cards.

Rasane pointed out alarming statistics showing a steady rise in cybercrime registrations: 10,692 cases in 2022, 11,974 in 2023, and 12,954 so far in 2024. Despite the increasing volume, case resolutions have not kept pace. Only 6,204 cases were resolved in 2022, 7,069 in 2023, and 1,730 in 2024, leaving a significant number of cases pending in courts.

“To ensure timely and technically efficient investigations, it is imperative to establish five cyber police stations, one in each circle of Pune. Additionally, these units should be modernised with e-office systems, strengthened with trained personnel, and staffed with additional officers,” Rasane demanded in his letter.
