Pune 2nd October 2023: In a major breakthrough in the Pune ISIS case, the Delhi Police’s special cell has arrested the wanted accused Shahnawaz alias Shafi Uzzama from Delhi. Shahnawaz, an engineer by profession was declared most wanted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and a reward of Rs 3 lakh was announced on his name.
He was nabbed by the Pune Police team from the city earlier along with two other accused who were wanted in a case related to explosives. However, he had managed to escape from the police custody as he and other two accused were being taken to their hideout in Pune’s Kondhwa. The police later realised the seriousness of the matter after it was revealed that the three accused were planning bomb blasts at several locations and had procured material for explosives.
The accused had also conducted tests in the forest areas and were working closely with some handlers. The case was later handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the agency had declared him wanted in the case. The Delhi Police said that Shahnawaz is a resident of Delhi and he was staying there after he fled from Pune. The police have also detained few more people along with him and further investigation in the matter is underway.
“The module was planning to carry out terror incidents in North India, taking instructions from foreign-based handlers. Incriminating materials were recovered including materials suspected to be used for IED fabrication” Delhi Police’s Special Cell said.
