Pune, 24th February 2023: According to a recent report by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Maharashtra has the highest level of river pollution in the country. The report, titled ‘Polluted River Stretches for Restoration of Water Quality’, reveals that 55 river banks in the state are at a dangerous level of pollution, out of a total of 311 river banks in the country that are considered to be in danger due to pollution.

The report highlights that rivers such as Mithi in Mumbai and Mula-Mutha in Pune are heavily polluted, and the situation is causing severe damage to riverine ecosystems and posing a threat to human health. The report identifies sewage from cities and industries as the primary cause of river pollution. The release of untreated wastewater containing chemicals and other waste materials into rivers is responsible for the high level of pollution.

Compared to the previous report in 2018, the current report shows a reduction in river pollution levels. However, the situation remains critical, and urgent measures are needed to control pollution levels and restore water quality. The report’s findings underscore the need for immediate action to address the issue of river pollution in the state and across the country.

The polluted river banks in Maharashtra include Bhima, Mutha, Savitri, Godavari, Kanhan, Mula, Pavana, Indrayani, Amba, Amaravati, Bori, Burai, Bhatsa, Bindusara, Chandrabhaga, Darna, Ghod, Gomai, Girna, Hivara, Kalu, Kan, Kolar, Koyana, Krishna, Kundalika, Manjira, Mor, Morna, Moochkundi, Morna, Neera, Panjra, Patalganga, Panganga, Pedhi, Pehler, Purna, Rangavali, Seena, Surya, Tansa, Tapi, Titur, Ulhas, Urmodi, Vaitrana, Vashti, Venna, Vaghur, Wainganga, Wardha, and Vena.

The high level of river pollution in Maharashtra is a cause for concern, and urgent action is needed to address the situation. The state government needs to take immediate measures to prevent the release of untreated sewage and industrial waste into rivers and restore the water quality of polluted river banks. It is also essential to create awareness among citizens to reduce their contribution to river pollution and adopt sustainable practices to protect the environment.
