Mumbai-Goa Highway Upgrade Boosts Konkan Connectivity with New Tunnel

Raigad, 20th May 2025: In a major boost to road travel ahead of the summer holiday rush, the second tunnel at Kashedi Ghat on the Mumbai-Goa highway is now fully operational. Power supply restoration on May 15 has enabled seamless traffic flow through the entire ghat section, significantly reducing travel time and improving road safety.
The newly opened tunnel, spanning 2 kilometers, is part of a 9-kilometer upgraded stretch that includes approach roads. With this upgrade, the journey between Poladpur (Raigad) and Khed (Ratnagiri) now takes just 10 to 15 minutes—down from the previous 40 to 45 minutes along the old, winding ghat route.
Earlier delays in tunnel operations were caused by persistent internal water leakage issues. However, authorities expedited repairs and ensured full functionality by the May 15 deadline. With stable power supply in place, both tunnels—Mumbai-bound and Ratnagiri-bound—are now open to traffic.
To further enhance safety, approximately 200 streetlights are being installed at both ends of the tunnel. Most of the lighting work has already been completed, supported by robust technical infrastructure that has sped up the finishing touches.
The improved connectivity is expected to benefit Konkan residents, tourists, and migrant workers (chakarmanya) traveling home for the holidays. In addition to reducing travel time, the tunnel provides a safer and more comfortable alternative to the older route, which was particularly hazardous during the monsoon and festive seasons.
