Nigdi–Chakan Pune Metro Extension Gains Pace; DPR Submitted to PCMC
Pimpri-Chinchwad, 11th August 2025: The long-awaited metro extension from Nigdi to Chakan has taken a significant step forward, with MahaMetro submitting the detailed project report (DPR) to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) administration. The proposed route, branching out from Bhakti-Shakti Chowk, is expected to connect nearly 75% of the city to the metro network once completed.
The plan comes alongside ongoing work to extend the existing metro from Pimpri to Nigdi. The new Nigdi–Chakan corridor is proposed to span approximately 35 to 40 km, linking the southern part of the city, including Bhosari, as well as major residential and IT hubs such as Wakad and Pimple Saudagar.
Key Junctions for Better Connectivity
The new line will create a crucial metro junction at Nashik Phata, enabling passengers to seamlessly travel between Bhosari, Chakan, the Dapodi–Nigdi route, and Pune city. Another junction at the Nigdi Bhakti-Shakti Metro Station will allow easy access to Ravet, Wakad, Pimple Gurav, and other parts of the network.
Proposed Route
The DPR outlines the route as follows: Nigdi Bhakti-Shakti Chowk → Ravet → Mukai Chowk → Punavale → Bhumkar Chowk → Wakad Bhujbal Chowk → Wakad → Pimple Saudagar → Pimple Gurav → Nashik Phata → Bhosari → Moshi → Chakan.
Growing Demand for Expansion
With Pimpri-Chinchwad’s population now exceeding three lakh and rising rapidly, civic groups and residents have been pressing for improved mass transit to tackle increasing congestion. The Bhakti-Shakti to Chakan stretch holds strategic importance due to its industrial zones, educational institutions, and densely populated residential areas.
Metro officials say the project will ease daily traffic snarls, reduce dependency on private vehicles, and boost overall development. “The expansion will integrate industrial, residential, and IT hubs into a single rapid transit network,” an official said.
Next Steps
The proposal will now be placed before PCMC’s general body meeting for approval, after which it will be sent to the state and central governments. Once sanctioned, work on the new line will begin. Officials believe the extension will significantly improve commuting conditions and offer major relief to the city’s growing number of daily commuters.
