According to Dr Sanjeev Wavare, Assistant Health Chief at the PMC for the Health Department, “PMC has already initiated the preventive steps. As part of it, we have started screening at the airport, and we have created a team which works in shifts. Whatever the number of flights or passengers that are coming in are screened thoroughly. They are checked for fever, any signs of lymphadenopathy or rashes at the time of arrival itself. If they have any symptoms they are referred to the Naidu Hospital which is our hospital for infectious diseases.”

He continued, “We have created a separate ward at the Naidu Hospital, till date there is no single case of Monkeypox in the city. Though we had a few suspected cases all of them turned out to be negative. We had sent swabs and particular tests for the test at the NIV and all of them have returned negative.”

While clarifying the disease’s potential for spreading, Wavare said, “This viral disease can be spread through air droplets through clothes contacts into the skin, sexual contact. So any person who is positive with the disease and comes in contact with a healthy person can contract the disease.”
