Greater Noida, 24th August 2025: In a shocking case of dowry-related violence, a woman identified as Nikki was burnt alive by her husband in Sirsa village of Greater Noida. The 29-year-old, married for nine years, succumbed to her injuries on August 22, three days after the incident.

According to police, Nikki’s husband Vipin and mother-in-law Daya allegedly assaulted her and demanded Rs 35 lakh as dowry. When she refused, Vipin poured petrol on her and set her ablaze in front of their young son. A video recorded by Nikki’s elder sister Kanchan, who also sustained injuries while trying to save her, shows the victim running downstairs engulfed in flames and pleading for help.

Neighbors rushed to her aid after hearing her screams, extinguished the fire with a blanket, and rushed her to Fortis Hospital. She was later referred to Delhi, but died during treatment.

Police Action and Accused’s Attempt to Flee

Following a complaint by Nikki’s sister, police registered a case of murder against husband Vipin, mother-in-law Daya, father-in-law Satveer, and brother-in-law Rohit. Vipin was arrested on August 23, while the others remain absconding.

On Sunday, while being taken for medical examination, Vipin attempted to escape by snatching an inspector’s pistol. Police shot him in the leg near Sirsa crossing and admitted him to the district hospital.

Despite video evidence and eyewitness accounts, Vipin claimed innocence, saying, “Neither did I kill her nor did I do anything. Husband and wife keep fighting. This is common.” Police, however, confirmed that the thinner used to set Nikki on fire has been recovered from the accused.

Family’s Allegations and Protest for Justice

Nikki’s uncle Raj Singh alleged that both his nieces Nikki and Kanchan were married into the same household in December 2016. He said the family had already given dowry, including a Scorpio car, but the in-laws continued to demand Rs 35 lakh. Multiple panchayats were held earlier, but the harassment persisted.

Following Nikki’s death, family members and villagers staged a protest at Kasna police station, demanding strict action. Many held placards reading “Justice for Nikki sister,” warning that such crimes could happen to others if justice was delayed.

ADCP’s Statement

ADCP Sudhir Kumar said, “On the basis of the complaint, a case of murder has been registered. The main accused Vipin has been arrested, and raids are underway to nab the remaining family members.”

The brutal incident has sparked outrage in Greater Noida, with locals staging sit-ins and demanding swift justice.
