Pimpri, 2nd September 2025: A year after its launch, Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited’s official mobile application, ‘Aapli PMPML’, has clocked impressive figures in digital ticketing and pass sales, but commuter feedback suggests there’s still some way to go before the app truly becomes the backbone of Pune’s urban transport system.

Launched in August 2024, the app has been downloaded by more than 13.5 lakh commuters and processed transactions worth ₹70.71 crore. On an average month, digital sales hover around ₹5.5 crore, with July 2025 peaking at ₹9.40 crore, followed by ₹8.79 crore in August.

Despite this growth, digital adoption remains modest, only 8.33% of PMPML’s monthly ridership of 3.5 crore currently using the app for tickets and passes.

Why Commuters Like It
The app was designed to encourage cashless travel and reduce dependence on physical counters. With features such as QR code-based ticketing, digital passes, live bus tracking, and an online complaint system, it has gained popularity among urban commuters.

“I use it daily. Live bus location helps me plan travel better, and I don’t have to wait at crowded ticket counters,” said one commuter. PMPML staff, too, report reduced workload at ticket counters thanks to digital adoption.

Where It Falls Short
However, passengers also highlight areas where the app struggles. Common complaints include:
-Frequent app updates that disrupt transactions.
-Live tracking missing for many buses.
-No bus timetable integrated into the system.
-Limited monthly pass options available online.
-Technical glitches that sometimes force users to clear cache or reinstall the app.

“The app is good, but it needs further improvements. Live bus tracking and availability of all types of passes should be ensured,” said another commuter.

PMPML Chairman and Managing Director Pankaj Deore acknowledged the gaps, stating, “This is the digital era. Our aim is to provide passengers with convenient online ticketing. The shortcomings in the app will be addressed to make it more user-friendly.”

Meanwhile, PMPML is also expanding its footprint. The corporation recently introduced a tourist bus service between Pune and Lonavala, which has become its 11th route after positive passenger response.

As Pune’s population and transport needs grow, PMPML’s digital push signals a shift towards cashless, tech-driven commuting. But unless persistent glitches and missing features are fixed, the ‘Aapli PMPML’ app may struggle to win over the majority of its daily 3.5 crore riders.
