New Delhi, 11th March 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Mauritius to a warm welcome at the airport, marking the beginning of his two-day official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing India’s strategic presence in the Indian Ocean region.

Ahead of his visit, PM Modi stated that the trip would further deepen the foundation of friendship between India and Mauritius. The visit comes at the invitation of Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam. In a statement before his departure on Monday midnight, PM Modi emphasized that his visit on March 11 and 12, 2025, would open a new chapter in India-Mauritius relations.

PM Modi will be the chief guest at Mauritius’ National Day celebrations on Wednesday, where a contingent from the Indian Defence Forces and an Indian Navy ship will participate, underscoring the strong defense and strategic ties between the two nations.

Strengthening Economic and Strategic Relations
During the visit, several important agreements are expected to be signed, further reinforcing the bond between India and Mauritius. Often referred to as “Mini India” due to its deep-rooted cultural and historical connections with India, Mauritius has a significant population of Indian origin, with traditions and customs reflecting strong Indian influences.

India is the largest trade and development partner of Mauritius, playing a key role in its economic growth. Given Mauritius’ strategic location in the Indian Ocean, it holds immense geopolitical significance for India. With China’s growing influence in the region, India aims to strengthen its foothold through enhanced diplomatic and security cooperation with Mauritius.

Focus on Maritime Security and SAGAR Initiative
A key agenda during PM Modi’s visit will be discussions on the security situation in the Indian Ocean region, which has gained prominence amid shifting global dynamics. Notably, during his previous visit to Mauritius, PM Modi introduced the “SAGAR” (Security and Growth for All in the Region) initiative, which focuses on ensuring safety and sustainable development in the Indo-Pacific.

As part of this initiative, India and Mauritius will collaborate on strengthening maritime security. A major step in this direction includes the establishment of a surveillance system for critical areas of the Indian Ocean. This joint effort aims to enhance monitoring capabilities and safeguard key maritime routes, ensuring regional stability.

Key Agreements and Future Prospects
In addition to security cooperation, several agreements are expected to be finalized during the visit, covering trade, infrastructure development, and economic collaboration. These measures will further cement India-Mauritius ties, ensuring a stronger and more secure future for both nations.
