Pune 19th Oct 2023: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has taken a significant step towards metro expansion by proposing a five-meter-wide reserved corridor on the Ring Road project, including 10 stations and 17 flyovers, as well as three railway overbridges. The Ring Road stretch is anticipated to be 65 meters wide and cover a total distance of 83.12 kilometers.

The decision to develop the Ring Road in the Regional Development Plan was made by PMRDA earlier. Previously, the total width was 123.97 kilometers with a width of 90 meters. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) had proposed widening the Ring Road to 110 meters. However, in both proposals, there is an overlap of approximately 15 kilometers in some villages.

In light of this, PMRDA decided to carve out a section of approximately 38.34 kilometers from the MSRDC’s Ring Road plan in certain villages. Consequently, this section was handed over to MSRDC, reducing PMRDA’s Ring Road length to 83.12 kilometers.

Ring Road falls under the 1987 Regional Development Plan. Throughout its construction, several locations have encountered challenges in acquiring necessary permissions for construction. Consequently, these issues have led to complications in land acquisition and increased project costs. Additionally, there has been significant opposition to the project. The government has not shown willingness to allocate funds for the Ring Road project, further complicating matters.
