Pune, 11th May 2022: In a shocking incident, an 11-year-old child was left alone with 22 dogs by his parents. This happened at the Krushnai building in Kondhwa.

The incident came to light when a resident alerted social workers who then contacted the police.

The parents along with the boy and the dogs lived in one BHK apartment. A resident called the Childline Foundation and informed them about this. The social workers came and advised the parents on May 4. The next day when they visited, it was seen that the house was locked from the outside and the child was alone with the dogs. This led them to call the child welfare committee and the police.

The case was registered at the Kondhwa police station. When they went to rescue the child, it was seen that the child was behaving like an animal and aping the dogs. He has lost much of his sense of identity. His parents had stopped sending him to school as he had started biting students.

Senior police inspector Sardar Patil said, “It was really difficult for the police to rescue the child. All the dogs are street animals and were not sterilised. Keeping animals in unhygienic conditions amounts to animal cruelty. Cops are investigating whether the couple had obtained any permission and will be arresting the couple after the decision of the child welfare committee. The police have written to the municipal corporation to take the dogs to a shelter.”

It has come to light that the couple were unemployed after a failed business. They did not cook food at home as they only ordered from outside. The pets would urinate and defecate inside the house.

The child has been admitted to Sassoon hospital. The Kondhwa police have booked the couple under relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act.
