Pune: 19-Year-Old Died In Leopard Attack; Panic Spreads Among Villagers

Shirur, 13th October 2022: A college girl was attacked by a leopard in Jori Malla at Jambut village in Shirur taluka of Pune district.

 

The girl bled to death on the spot as the leopard dragged her by the throat for 150 feet. The incident, which took place around 7 pm on Wednesday (October 12), created panic in the area. This is the fourth incident of a leopard attack in this area since the last month.

 

The deceased girl has been identified as Pooja Bhagwan Narwade (19), a resident of Jori Mala, Jambut, taluka Shirur. Her body was found in the sugarcane field behind the house. She was alone at home as her father went out. At around 7.00 pm, when she went to the washroom behind the house, she saw a leopard sitting in a sugarcane field, Pooja screamed for help. But by then the leopard had already pounced on her.

Her voice made the people and the youths run to the house, but by then the leopard had taken her by the neck. In the pouring rain, the young men tried to find a trail in the sugarcane with sticks in their hands, but at some distance, the leopard was seen tearing the limbs of her body. The leopard ran away as the youth shouted and raised sticks.

 

An atmosphere of panic spread in the Jambut area as soon as the news of this terrible incident came to light. On August 5, the dead body of Sachin Balu Jori (35) of the same settlement was also found in a sugarcane field.

 

Two days after that, there were attacks on farming labourers, Harishchandra Barku Waghmare (62) of Jambut and Sanjay Nana Dudhwade (30) in Panchtale area of Pimparkkhed.

 

Last year, Samridhi Yogesh Jori, a 2.5-year-old child, also died in a leopard attack in the Jori Lavan area of Jambut.

 

After the incident, Manohar Mhasekar, Shirur Forest Range Officer, and Police Sub-Inspector Sunil Ugle rushed to the spot. Sarpanch Dattatreya Jori, Police Patil Rahul Jagtap and locals confirmed the incident of the leopard attack.
