Vishrantwadi, 3rd July 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Friday commenced the removal of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor on Alandi Road as part of efforts to reduce chronic traffic congestion on one of the city’s busiest stretches.

In the first phase, the civic body dismantled approximately 500 metres of the BRT corridor between Vishrantwadi Chowk and Parulekar School (Shantinagar). The remaining three-kilometre stretch from Vishrantwadi to Phulenagar will be removed in phases over the coming days.

The Alandi Road BRT corridor is the last major BRT stretch in the city to be dismantled after similar corridors on other roads were removed in recent years. Residents and public representatives had repeatedly complained that the dedicated BRT lane reduced the effective road width and contributed to traffic bottlenecks. Following a review, the PMC decided to remove the corridor.

After receiving administrative approval for the project, the PMC’s Road Department began work by targeting the most congested section of the route.

As part of the initial phase, RCC lane separators near the Sathe Biscuit BRT bus station were removed. The work included dismantling around 250 metres of concrete dividers on both sides of the road, removing approximately 750 metres of iron safety railings, and demolishing a BRT bus station measuring about 35 metres in length and four metres in width.

According to the Road Department, the work has been prioritised to ensure smoother traffic movement along the Palkhi route ahead of the annual Ashadhi Wari pilgrimage. The remaining BRT corridor and bus stations on the stretch will be removed in a phased manner over the next few days.
