Hinjawadi, 17th December 2023: MP Supriya Sule has called upon the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and the collector’s office to take decisive measures against the illegal dumping plaguing the Mula riverbed near Hinjawadi, falling within the Baramati constituency under her Lok Sabha representation.

Residents in the vicinity of the Blue Ridge township in Hinjawadi have consistently voiced concerns about the burning of garbage and the unauthorized disposal of construction debris. Despite numerous complaints, authorities have yet to address the issues, leaving locals without relief.

Illegitimate dumping into the Mula river near the Blue Ridge township is causing significant harm to the riverbed and the environment, as highlighted by Sule on a social media platform on Saturday. Urging prompt government intervention and immediate corrective action, she emphasized the urgency of addressing this environmental threat.

Ravindra Sinha, a member of the Hinjawadi Residents Welfare Association (HIRWA), pointed out the jurisdictional challenge in the area. While it doesn’t fall under the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) or Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), it remains urbanized without clear authority overseeing it. Sinha lamented the lack of a permanent solution from authorities like the Pune district collectorate or Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) despite repeated complaints about illegal debris dumping, garbage disposal, and unauthorized sand mining.

The Mula river serves as a crucial water source for nearby townships, but the ongoing illegal dumping has adversely affected water quality. Sinha expressed concern, stating, “Many residential societies rely on river water for their daily needs, and this area lacks municipal corporation coverage. The widespread dumping of waste and debris has had a detrimental impact on water quality.”

In response to the escalating situation, VV Killedar, the sub-regional officer of MPCB, assured action. “I shall look into the matter and instruct our field officer to inspect the area immediately and take corrective action,” stated Killedar, acknowledging the need for swift and effective measures to address the environmental concerns raised by the Hinjawadi community.
