Handewadi, 24 May 2025: Poor-quality drainage construction on the stretch between Handewadi Chowk and Holkarwadi has sparked a political uproar and safety concerns after a recent accident near the Royal Hotel. The issue has prompted sharp criticism from Shiv Sena’s Pune district president Ulhas Tupe, who blamed civic negligence for putting lives at risk.

Speaking to reporters during a site inspection, Tupe alleged that the drainage line work was executed with inferior materials, accusing the contractors of compromising on quality and misusing public funds.

“We demand that the drainage chambers and pipelines installed here be thoroughly inspected against the original work order. If they fail to match the sanctioned standards, the contractor must be penalised immediately,” Tupe said.

He further pointed out that the chamber construction near the Handewadi crematorium has been left incomplete, warning that the situation could become dangerous, especially with the upcoming monsoon season. He called on the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to install protective barricades around the site to prevent mishaps.

“This is not just poor planning, it’s criminal negligence,” Tupe added. “The area becomes a death trap during rains, and officials cannot look the other way.”

Expressing frustration over repeated inaction, Tupe warned that Shiv Sena would be compelled to stage a strong protest if immediate remedial measures are not taken.

“We will not allow the administration to endanger the lives of Handewadi residents. If they continue to ignore these safety lapses, we will hit the streets,” he warned.
Tupe also appealed to the civic body to prioritize the issue and act swiftly to avoid further incidents.

“The lives of common citizens are not negotiable. This problem must be resolved before someone loses their life due to official apathy,” he said.

The incident has once again put the spotlight on the quality of civic infrastructure works in the city’s expanding suburbs.
