Pune: Contemporary Paintings Of Shivaji Maharaj Found In Germany, France And America

Pune, 15th June 2021: Historians have found three contemporary paintings of Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Germany, Paris (France) and America.

The paintings drawn in Deccan Gowalkonda style and are miniature belonged to the 17th century. These paintings were found by a history researcher and member of Bharat Itihas Sanshodhak Mandal Prasad Tare.

These unpublished paintings were transferred into Europe by then European traders. Paris based researcher Shashi Dharmadhikari helped Tare in his efforts to publish the paintings.

Elaborating on the style of paintings Prasad said, “These paintings were made when Maharaj had gone on a long expedition to the southern part of the country. During his era, there were numerous regional drawing styles but the Gowalkonda style, which was developed at Gowalkonda, the capital of Kutubshah was recognised widely. Most of them were drawn during the 17th century.”

He also said that he is planning a book on rare paintings of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Salient features of the paintings

In the paintings, Maharaj is seen wearing a long robe, mojari and pearl ornaments. The first painting can be found at the State Art Gallery in Germany. In this painting, the sword is in an orange sheath. While in the second painting found at Paris’s private museum Maharaj is holding ‘patta’, as the armour and a ‘sharp knife’, hanging at his waist.

The third painting is from America, said Prasad.
