Pune: Department of economics conducted 3rd World Food Safety Day, highlighting the importance of food and its role in economy and society

Pune, June 7, 2021: Department of Economics, PG & Research Centre, Y&M AKI’s Poona College of Arts, Science & Commerce organized a national webinar on 3rd World Food Safety Day, on 7th June for the students, research scholars and faculty members. The core objective of the webinar was to get them aware of the gravity and severity of food safety and security along with the theme, programs, and objectives of this World Day observed by the United Nations.

Principal of the College, Prof. Dr Aftab Anwar Shaikh highlighted the theme, slogans and background of the World Food Safety Day. He drew the attention of the participants on the theme of the Day ‘Safe food now for a healthy tomorrow’ and this ‘food safety is everyone’s business.

The Chief Guest, Prof. Vilas Adhav, Head, Department of Economics Savitribai Phule Pune University addressed the participants and spoke about the relevance of observing this World Food Safety Day. He highlighted the importance of food for a person and its role in the economy and society. Food is the basic need of all living creatures and he has thrown light on the need of food in recent pandemics especially in the time of lockdown when poor, labourers and other migrant people were stuck in their houses without food.

He has given references to the work done by Poona College under the leadership of Principal, Prof. Aftab Anwar Shaikh for distributing food packets for those needy people during that time. He shared his rich knowledge and experiences on the said subject and has provided in-depth information regarding the importance of food safety, food security and its need. In this time of crisis, he suggested that we should work together to ensure safe food for all.

Dr M Shahid Jamal Ansari, Secretary of Webinar and Incharge of the Department of Economics addressed the participants as resource person. He has discussed in detail the theme of this World Food Safety Day i.e. ‘safe food now for a healthy tomorrow’ and intelligently differentiated between food safety and food security in the light of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 2 i.e Zero hunger. He has argued about the observance of this Day at the global level in the context of food safety and food security with statistics. Finally, he has thrown light on the slogan and various actions taken by WHO and FAO to ensure food safety and security for all.

There were a large number of participants from all parts of India, particularly from Maharashtra state. This webinar was conducted through Zoom Video Conferencing. A certificate of participation was shared electronically after the feedback form was filled. There was no Registration Fee for participation.
