Pune district tops in state in number of polling booths

Mumbai, Mar 31: For the ensuing Lok Sabha elections out of over 95000 polling booths, 61000 are located in rural while 34000 plus are located in urban areas. Pune district accounts for the maximum number of 7600 voting centers followed by Mumbai Suburb,and Thane. Among the urban areas Mumbai Suburb tops the in the number of polling centers while Pune has more polling booths in rural area. Over 1300 polling centers are located in forest and semi-forest areas and more than 90000 poll9ng centers are housed in schools, colleges and government buildings.

Polling center is an inseparable part of the polling process. They play an important role in facilitating voters to exercise their franchise. Majority of these centers are located in schools, colleges and government buildings, although at times temporary polling centers are also set up. For the Lok Sabha elections 1100 such temporary polling centers are set up.

The Chief Election Commission has given directives to provide various necessary facilities at the polling centers. These facilities are provided at urban and rural polling centers without any difference. However, changes are made according to the local situations with the approval of the Election Commission. For the Lok Sabha elections, there are 95,473 polling centers set up in the state. Their number may increase.

After the fixing of auxiliary polling centers the number of total polling centers may increase.
