Pune, 30th July 2023: Pune Division of Central Railway has been diligently ensuring safety and adherence to the Railway’s condemnation policy by scrapping coaches that have reached the end of their 25-year codal life. From April 2022 to June 2023, a total of 71 coaches have been condemned and subsequently sold for scrap, bringing in an impressive earning of Rs 10.35 crore.

During the last financial year (2022-23), the division condemned 43 coaches, which contributed to a substantial revenue of Rs. 5.36 crore through their scrap sale. In the recent three months alone, from April 2023 to June 2023, a total of 28 coaches were scrapped, fetching a revenue of Rs. 4.99 crore.

The decision to condemn a coach is made based on an age-cum-condition basis, with a maximum lifespan of 25 years, in adherence to the codal life policy. Besides regular annual overhauls, every coach undergoes a detailed examination before being attached to a train, ensuring only safe coaches are put into service.

“By promptly scrapping coaches that have reached the end of their useful life, the Pune Division of Central Railway not only guarantees passenger safety but also actively contributes to the Zero Scrap Mission” officials of the Central Railway said. This mission aims to minimize the accumulation of unused and obsolete materials, promoting a sustainable and efficient railway system.
