Pune, November 4, 2020: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to take Environment Clearance before going ahead with High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR) in the city. The directive was given while hearing the plea filed by city-based environmentalist Adv. Sarang Yadwadkar.

To ease the traffic in the city, PMC had decided to implement HCMTR along with other modes of transport. The total length of the project is 36 km which will be in circular shape. Out of the six lanes four will be allocated for traffic while two would be for BRTS lane. It would be an elevated project with 36 stations on it.

The expected cost of the project is Rs 6,000 crore and 12 lakh meter square foot area would be under it. According to the rules, if any developmental project is above 1.5 lakh sq.ft, it requires Environment Clearance.

Adv. Yadwadkar said that HCMTR is an outdated project. It will pass through various parts of the city including the cantonments. Besides that, it will be opened for heavy traffic, which means it will lead to air pollution in the city.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had made out a detailed study of the transportation requirements of Pune Metropolitan Area in 1978-1982. Based on this study, they have identified a High Capacity Mass Transit Route corridor (HCMTR). The High Capacity Mass Transit Route will pass through Bopodi, Aundh, Shivajinagar, Erandwane, Kothrud, Karve Nagar, Dattawadi, Parvati, Bibvewadi, Wanawadi, Salisbury Park, Hadapsar, Mundhwa, Kalyani Nagar, Yerwada and Kalas areas. The HCMTR Corridor shall help decongest roads in the city as heavy vehicles can travel via the ring road to bypass Pune instead of entering the city.
