Stolen cash and ornaments worth Rs 1.6 lakh have been recovered from their possession.

The deceased has been identified as Shalini Baban Sonawane (70), a resident of Sayali Heights building in Hingne Khurd.

On October 30, Pune Police Control Room received information that a flat was burglarized and an old woman was lying injured and unconscious in her flat.

Senior Police Inspector Devidas Gheware, in-charge of Sinhgad road police station rushed to the spot alongwith Inspector (Crime) Pramod Waghmare, and the Detection Branch (DB) team.

Inspector Gheware said that the woman was lying unconscious and the cupboards in the house were open and gold ornaments and cash were found stolen from those cupboards. The woman had died.

On 2nd November, the police officer of the investigation team, Ujjav Mokashi got information from the children near Rokdoba temple near the spot that on 30th October, while going to eat ‘Panipuri’ in the afternoon, two of his friends came back home without eating Panipuri. The CCTV footage of the children rushing to the spot raised more suspicions so the officer took the children into confidence and questioned them further based on the information. The children were answering without any fuss or gestures. After getting more information about the children, it came to light that one of them was in the habit of stealing from his own house.

After that, when the children were questioned, shocking information came to light and two minor boys (age 14 and 16) confessed that they had killed the elderly woman.

They lived in same building and often went to meet the woman. They knew where she kept the money. About two months ago, they had stolen the key to her house after watching the CID series. They waited for her to look away and when the woman was not paying attention, they pushed her from behind choking her mouth and nose.  After that, Rs 93,000 in cash and gold jewelry worth Rs 67,500 were stolen from the cupboard.

“They used hand gloves to prevent their fingerprints while committing the crime as they had seen it on an episode in the CID series. The cash and gold jewelry was stolen by the boys have been seized from them”, inspector Gheware further said.
