Pune: Katraj-Kondhwa Road Turning Into Death Trap; 17 Deaths Recorded Till 2022
Katraj, 12th May 2023: Stalled widening of Katraj-Kondhwa road and its disrepair are causing great hardship to the citizens. The number of major accidents has also increased. Accidents and deaths are happening on the roads due to traffic congestion and bad condition of the road.
A husband and wife died in an accident that took place in front of the RMD school in Kondhwa police station limits today (12th May) at around 7 am. Both husband and wife were leaving for a function on an Activa two-wheeler when their vehicle was hit by an unknown vehicle and they died on the spot.
At present, about 7,000 to 8,000 vehicles pass through the road every hour. In this, the proportion of heavy vehicles is significant. The number of accidents caused by heavy vehicles is also seen to be high. However, the municipal administration is not paying attention to this and the work is not being given the desired speed.
Since the groundbreaking ceremony of the road widening work in 2018 till September 2022, a total of 50 accidents have been reported in Bharti Vidyapeeth and Kondhwa Police Station in the 3.5-kilometer stretch from Katraj Chowk to Khadimshin Chowk.
17 deaths and 36 serious injuries have been reported in four years to both police stations. Bharti Vidyapeeth Police Station limits are coming from Katraj Chowk to Gokulnagar Chowk on Katraj Kondhwa Roads. So, from Gokulnagar Chowk to Khadimshin Chowk, the area is coming under the Kondhwa police station. It is observed that no minor accidents were recorded in this. Therefore, the issue of safety of pedestrians and drivers has been raised.
