Pune: Life-Sentenced Prisoner Escapes from Yerawada Open Prison

Yerwada, 12th December 2024: A prisoner serving a life sentence escaped from Yerwada’s open prison. The escaped convict has been identified as Anil Meghdas Patonia (35), a resident of Mharal village in the Titwala area of Thane district.

Patonia was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with an additional fine of ₹15,000. Known for good behavior during his incarceration, he was transferred to the open prison, a facility designated for inmates with a record of positive conduct.

According to FIR registered with Yerwada police station, the incident came to light on Wednesday afternoon during a routine roll call at the open prison, when Patonia was found missing. A subsequent search failed to locate him, leading to a formal complaint being filed by Rajendra Marle, an employee of the open prison.

ACP Pranjali Sonawane visited the prison following the incident. Assistant Police Inspector Takle is currently investigating the matter.
