Pune: Maharashtra Govt Orders Forensic Audit of SPPU, SNDT and YCMOU; Revenue, Expenditure and Governance to be Examined
Pune, 3rd June 2026: The Maharashtra higher and technical education department has ordered forensic audits of three state universities, including Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), amid demands for greater scrutiny of their financial and administrative functioning.
According to a government circular issued on Tuesday, SPPU will undergo a forensic audit covering the period from 2017-18 to 2025-26. Separate audits have also been ordered for SNDT Women’s University and Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) for the period between 2021-22 and 2025-26.
The decision follows repeated demands by members of the SPPU Senate seeking an independent examination of the university’s financial transactions, expenditure and administrative decisions.
The state government has directed Higher Education Director Shailendra Deolankar to supervise the process and submit a report for further action.
Mukund M Chitale & Co has been appointed to conduct the audit of SPPU and has been given 45 days to submit its findings. Choice Consultancy Services Pvt Ltd and Kirtane & Pandit LLP will audit SNDT Women’s University and YCMOU, respectively, within 30 days.
The audit will examine revenue and expenditure records, fund management, admissions, examinations, research activities and administrative processes. It will also look into possible financial and procedural irregularities, including grant utilisation, procurement practices and record management.
