Pune, 15th June 2026: A text message sent by Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) informing consumers that their existing electricity meters would be replaced with smart meters within 48 hours has triggered anger and concern among residents, many of whom have questioned the need for replacing meters that are functioning properly.

Consumers said they began receiving messages from MSEDCL citing a government gazette notification dated August 17, 2021, and informing them that smart meters would be installed in place of existing meters within 48 hours of receiving the communication.

The move has drawn criticism from consumer groups and residents, who allege that smart meters are being imposed without adequate consultation or consent. Many questioned why working meters are being replaced despite there being no complaints regarding faulty readings, technical issues or power theft.

Residents alleged that the utility was using government directives to justify what they described as a forced rollout of the technology. While MSEDCL has highlighted benefits such as accurate billing, real-time monitoring through a mobile application and incentives linked to solar energy consumption, several consumers remain sceptical about the promised transparency and potential long-term implications.

The issue has gained traction at a time when residents are already grappling with rising electricity bills. Several consumer groups have demanded that MSEDCL withdraw the 48-hour replacement notice and engage with consumers before proceeding further. Some have also warned of protests if the rollout continues without addressing public concerns.

MSEDCL, however, has defended the smart meter programme, stating that around 1.2 crore smart meters have already been installed across the state. According to the utility, the technology has significantly reduced billing-related complaints by ensuring accurate meter readings and allowing consumers to track electricity consumption on an hourly basis through a mobile application.

Officials said the smart meters also help consumers identify issues such as earthing faults and electricity leakage in real time. MSEDCL further claimed that consumers can avail a rebate of 85 paise per unit for electricity consumed between 9 am and 5 pm, in addition to incentives linked to digital payments and green energy initiatives.
