Pune, 18th July 2023: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has presented its water budget for the year 2023-24 to the Water Resources Department, suggesting a water demand of 20.90 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic feet). In line with this, a request was made in the Legislative Assembly today to allocate a water quota of 21 TMC for Pune.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation has commenced the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for supplying water to the 34 villages in question, as stated by Industry Minister Uday Samant.

During the question hour in the Legislative Assembly today, MLA Ravindra Dhangekar raised a pertinent query. Dhangekar, along with Bhimrao Tapkir, Sangram Thopte, Sanjay Jagtap, and Sunil Tingre, voiced concerns about the water shortage issues faced by the 34 villages under consideration.

The 34 villages within the municipal corporation are grappling with a severe water crisis, receiving unsanitary water supply. The implementation of a comprehensive water supply scheme in the city remains incomplete. Dhangekar questioned whether this plan would be swiftly executed and whether measures would be taken to curb the water tanker mafia.

Additionally, Dhangekar inquired about the approval of a 21 TMC water quota due to the population increase in Pune city. Minister Uday Samant responded on behalf of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, stating that the Municipal Corporation is actively preparing the DPR for the water supply scheme in the 34 villages. Samant assured that a decision would be made soon.

As the question-and-answer session in the Legislative Assembly is limited to one hour, today’s discussion was cut short after the fifth question, which focused on Pune’s water supply. Samant addressed Dhangekar’s query, but the session concluded before further deliberations could take place. Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar clarified that the question-and-answer hour had concluded, thus preventing any additional discussions on Pune’s water supply.
