Pune: Nira River Sub-Basin Storage Surges to 40.16 TMC, Easing Water Concerns

Bhor, 3rd January 2025: The Nira River Sub-Basin, which includes dams such as Nira Devghar, Bhatghar, Gunjawani, and Veer, currently has a water storage of 40.16 TMC. This is significantly higher than last year’s storage of 33.33 TMC during the same period, showing an increase of 7 TMC.
Last year, concerns about water supply plagued the southern part of Pune District, Satara District, and Solapur District during the May-June period. However, with the Nira Sub-Basin fuller this year, residents don’t have to worry about drinking water shortages.
Current Water Storage in Nira River Sub-Basin:
1. Nira Devghar Dam: 10.36 TMC (88.40% of capacity)
2. Bhatghar Dam: 21.10 TMC (89.78% of capacity)
3. Veer Dam: 5.41 TMC (57.56% of capacity)
4. Gunjawani Dam: 3.28 TMC (88.90% of capacity)
The Nira River Sub-Basin serves as a vital water source for multiple regions across three districts in Maharashtra. In Pune District, the talukas of Purandar, Baramati, and Indapur rely on this water system. The sub-basin also supplies water to Khandala and Phaltan talukas in Satara District, as well as Malshiras and Sangola talukas in Solapur District.
The good water storage is attributed to ample rainfall in the catchment area of the Nira River Sub-Basin during the previous season. According to the Irrigation Department of the Maharashtra State Government, water is being released at a rate of 1,400 cusecs from the right canal and 400 cusecs from the left canal.
