Pune: Only Two Corporators From 23 Villages Merged With PMC, Municipal Elections Will Be Held As Per 2011 Census
Pune, 27 July 2021: With the inclusion of 23 villages around the city limits in the Pune municipal corporation, many aspirants from there are waiting to be elected as corporators. However, as this election will be held as per the 2011 census, the number of corporators will be increased only by two.
The Maharashtra state government has issued a notification to include 23 villages in the municipal limits. It has also been clarified that the development plan of these villages will be prepared by PMRDA. Currently, work is being done by the municipal waste, water supply, electricity and property tax departments.
With 23 villages coming under municipal corporation, the discussion is on which political party will benefit from this. BJP and NCP have appointed a village councillor to maintain public relations and organizational structure in these villages. Emphasis has also been laid on the meetings of elderly people and former people’s representatives in the villages included. Many aspirants have also started preparing for the municipal elections in the village.
As per the amended provisions of the Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporations Act 2016, the number of 161 corporators has been fixed for a population of 3 million. Thereafter, one corporator is elected for every one lakh population. In 2011, the population of Pune was 31 lakh. As a result, one corporator was added and a total of 162 posts were created. In 2017, 11 villages came under PMC, as the population of these villages is one and a half lakh, two corporators were elected from there. Thus, at present, there are 164 corporators in Pune Municipal Corporation.
According to the 2011 census, the 23 villages included in the municipal corporation have a population of 1.90 lakh. As per the provisions of the Act, one corporator is added for every one lakh population above 30 lakhs. Accordingly, two corporators will be elected from 23 villages and will go to PMC.
PMC has appointed Ajit Deshmukh as the election branch officer. As per the order of the Election Commission, the formation of new wards in the city will be decided by this branch. Deshmukh said that as no information has been received from the commission about the upcoming municipal elections, no action is being taken at present.
