Pune, 18th May 2022: The Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) will soon survey the ragged buildings within its limit ahead of the monsoon season. PCB has taken this initiative to identify structures which are weak to damage in heavy rains and to expel the residents from these spots.

On Thursday, Subrat Pal, CEO, PCB, informed that “Our officials will conduct the survey and identify dangerous structures within our limits. It is an important activity to prevent any tragedy during the season of monsoon. We are examining some of the spots which are identified as precarious and dangerous in the past.”

150 dangerous structures were identified by the engineering department of the PCB in their last survey. under Section 297 of the Cantonments Act, 2006, they even sent eviction notices to the tenants.

“In some cases, the owners and tenants had agreed to repair their structures and about 15-20 buildings were repaired. However, most of the tenants did not pay attention to hazardous state of the buildings. We will focus on the structures which were declared risky in the last few surveys this year,” said a senior official from the engineering department of the board.

Activist Sanjay Kawade, a resident of Ghorpadi said, “These buildings have posed a danger to the citizens living in the area. The board should conduct a special meeting of the owners and fix the matter before the monsoon.”

There are about 3,000 properties within the PCB’s area of jurisdiction. Legal disputes over repairs between tenants and leaseholders have induced many structures beyond restoration. A PCB official said, “We can not grant NOCs until and unless we get the consent of the owner for the occupants to carry out any repair work.”
