Pimpri Chinchwad, 3rd April 2023: With the rising urbanization, cities in India are growing rapidly, which places great stress on urban infrastructural services. This demand for services also rises with the increase in industrialization and development. Water supply to citizens for domestic and commercial usage is one such area where a larger amount of focus is necessary. Climate change further creates a variation in rainfall, making it challenging to meet the water demand.

In such a scenario, research and analysis are essential for better planning and decision-making in water management practices for government bodies. This will help make policies more informed and evidence-based about the current and future patterns of demand and supply, water risks, the need for infrastructure, and alternative sources of supply.

On the occasion of World Water Day, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation signed an MOU with CPC Analytics and Pune Knowledge Cluster (PKC) to collaborate on water and sustainability initiatives. In this light, the MoU was signed on 23rd March 2023 with the two research organizations, PKC, and CPC, wherein data and insights related to urban water would be shared with them, such as water supply, water usage, water treatment, total inflow and outflow, catchment areas, and natural resources, etc.

CPC Analytics and PKC will gather and analyze the data and make it available on a single platform. This platform will help the departments with data analytics for quicker and informed decision-making in the water domain. This data sharing will enable the Municipal Corporation to make better public policies on urban water, with a viewpoint of sustainability and water security.

Speaking about the MoU, Shekhar Singh (IAS) Municipal Commissioner, PCMC said, “PCMC has been working consistently to secure water security for all citizens. This project would aid in understanding and planning the water demand and supply for the city, for the short and medium-term.”

The MoU represents a significant milestone in the relationship among the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, CPC Analytics, and PKC. It is expected that the collaboration will result in meaningful and tangible improvements in using urban water data and its usage.
