Pimpri, 22nd December 2022: The burden of penalty tax imposed for the last 14 years has finally been removed. The Maharashtra state government made a historic announcement yesterday to waive the penalty tax in the ongoing winter session in Nagpur.

Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Pimpri Chinchwad City President and MLA, Mahesh Landge, made an appearance yesterday. While discussing it, Pimpri-Chinchwad residents side was ably presented in the hall. Finally, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis took a positive stance and announced to waive penalty tax for Pimpri-Chinchwad.

According to Section 267 ‘A’ of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, on and after 4th January 2008, illegal constructions were penalized twice the property tax payable. Residential constructions between 1,000 and 2,000 square feet were penalized at the rate of 50 per cent of property tax per annum. Residential constructions above two thousand square feet are being penalized at twice the rate of property tax per annum. Remaining non-residential, mixed, and industrial properties were penalized at double the rate. Therefore, the unjust levying of the penalty was opposed by the people’s representatives and citizens of all parties.

Meanwhile, due to this historic decision, the fight against the regularization of unauthorized constructions has gained strength, and it is expected that the demands of PCMC residents will be met by the Shinde-Fadnavis government.

A total of 96,777 constructions in Pimpri-Chinchwad will get relief from the penalty waiver. About 4.50 lakh citizens and small entrepreneurs, including traders and professionals, have been exempted from the penalty tax. The decision of the state government is being welcomed. Currently, the penalty tax for illegal construction is Rs 467.65 crore. The current year’s tax is Rs 346.81 crore with total arrears of Rs 814 crore. Out of this, about Rs 450 crore has been cleared for basic tax recovery, and about Rs.120 crore income tax collection will be facilitated every year.

“For the last two and a half years, we were waiting for attention to be given to the amnesty of punishments in Pimpri-Chinchwad. Finally, the issue was discussed in the legislature. The state government understood the position of Pimpri-Chinchwad. BJP MLA Laxman Jagtap from the city had been making this demand for many years. Today, I was able to stand up for my townspeople and because of that, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that they are freeing us” Landge.
