Pune: Pimpri-Chinchwad to Get 100 MLD Additional Water from Pavana Dam, Says MLA Shankar Jagtap
Pimpri Chinchwad, 25th March 2026: In a significant step towards addressing water scarcity in Pimpri-Chinchwad, the Maharashtra government has assured that permission will be granted within the next 15 days to draw an additional 100 MLD (million litres per day) of water from the Pavana Dam. The assurance was given by Water Resources Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil during discussions in the state Assembly.
Chinchwad MLA Shankar Jagtap raised the issue strongly during a half-hour discussion in the Assembly on Wednesday, highlighting the growing water needs of Pimpri-Chinchwad city. Following the discussion, the minister gave a positive response and directed officials to allow the civic body to lift the additional water from the dam.
Speaking about the development, Jagtap said the city has been facing increasing pressure on its water supply due to rapid population growth. “Considering the rising population of Pimpri-Chinchwad, the existing water supply has been insufficient. We have been consistently pursuing this issue with the state government. After raising the matter firmly in the Assembly, Water Resources Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil has assured that permission will be granted within 15 days to draw an additional 100 MLD of water from Pavana Dam. This will provide significant relief to citizens during the summer,” he said.
According to Jagtap, the city currently consumes around 8.38 TMC of water annually, equivalent to about 650 MLD. With the population of Pimpri-Chinchwad nearing 3.7 million, the civic administration has been implementing alternate-day water supply in several areas due to limited availability.
A meeting regarding the city’s water supply situation was also held during the ongoing state legislative session. During the meeting, officials discussed the proposal to lift an additional 100 MLD of water from Pavana Dam. In addition, the government has issued orders to permanently transfer 0.95 hectares of land at Mauje Shire in Maval taluka from the Water Resources Department for infrastructure related to bringing water from the Andra Dam to the city.
At this site, infrastructure such as a jackwell, approach channel, pump house and substation will be constructed. These facilities are expected to remove technical obstacles in bringing Andra Dam water directly to Pimpri-Chinchwad, thereby strengthening the city’s long-term water supply.
Jagtap said the government is committed not only to increasing water availability but also to improving sewage treatment systems to prevent river pollution and ensure that citizens receive their rightful share of water from projects such as Andra and Bhama Askhed.
The meeting was attended by Executive Director Hanumant Dhumal, Chief Engineer R.A. Kayalwar, Superintending Engineer Prithviraj Phalke, Urban Development Department Deputy Secretary Shivaji Chavan, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation Additional Commissioner Vikrant Bagade, Water Supply and City Engineer Ajay Suryavanshi, and Executive Engineer Mahesh Barde, among other officials.
The proposed additional allocation from Pavana Dam is expected to provide major relief to residents of Pimpri-Chinchwad, particularly during the summer months when water demand typically rises.
