Pune: Pimpri-Chinchwad’s Innovative Waste-to-Energy Project Generates 14 MW of Electricity
Pimpri, 17th October 2023: In a significant achievement, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation proudly announced that its pioneering waste-to-energy project, located at the Moshi Garbage Depot, is successfully generating 14 megawatts (MW) of electricity. This eco-friendly endeavour marks the state’s first such project initiated by a municipal corporation and was inaugurated on August 1, 2023, by none other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Municipal Commissioner and Administrator, Shekhar Singh, shared insights into the project’s journey, highlighting its successful completion. The project’s technical aspects were carefully examined, involving coordination with Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) and the Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited
(MAHATRANSCO). As the first power generation project of its kind in the state, various novel issues emerged, necessitating thorough consideration.
Regulations governing power generation set by both Central and State Governments underwent scrutiny, which consumed some time. Furthermore, the electricity generated needed to be seamlessly connected to Mahapareshan’s feeder grid. Once the technicalities were fully addressed, the project commenced electricity generation in phases, ultimately achieving an impressive 14 MW capacity. Commissioner Shekhar Singh confirmed that the project is now operating at full capacity.
The waste depot located in Moshi has been grappling with a diminishing capacity to accommodate garbage, resulting in the accumulation of substantial waste mountains. To avert a potential garbage crisis within the city, the municipal corporation is actively working to secure the forest department’s land reserved for the garbage depot at Punawale. However, to facilitate this transition, the forest department must allocate space. As a solution, the municipality has identified a suitable site in Chandrapur and is expediting the administrative processes to facilitate the transfer of this land to the forest department.
