Pune, 4th June 2026: With the monsoon fast approaching, serious irregularities have been uncovered in the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) pre-monsoon cleaning works. During a surprise inspection, PMC Additional Commissioner Prajit Nair detected significant lapses in the cleaning of stormwater drains and chambers, revealing that several works reported as completed on paper had not been executed on the ground.

Following the inspection, Nair issued show-cause notices to the Assistant Municipal Commissioners of the Kasba-Vishrambaugwada ward offices, along with a deputy engineer, seeking explanations for the alleged negligence.

“During physical inspections at locations where the work was officially reported as completed, it was found that the cleaning had not actually been carried out. Therefore, show-cause notices have been issued to the concerned officers and the engineer. Such negligence will not be tolerated, and strict action will follow if similar lapses are detected during future inspections,” said PMC Additional Commissioner Prajit Nair.

According to PMC officials, regional ward offices had been entrusted with carrying out the annual pre-monsoon cleaning of drains, stormwater channels, and chambers across the city. However, during a field visit to areas under the Kasba and Vishrambaugwada ward offices, Additional Commissioner Nair personally inspected several stormwater chambers.

When the chambers were opened, large quantities of leaves, garbage, and silt were found inside, indicating that the cleaning work had either been carried out inadequately or not undertaken at all. The concerned engineering and ward officials reportedly failed to provide satisfactory explanations regarding the condition of the chambers.

Taking serious note of the discrepancies, Nair issued show-cause notices to Assistant Municipal Commissioners Timayya Jagale and Pradeep Awhad, as well as the concerned deputy engineer.

Strict Warning to Officials
Following the inspection, Additional Commissioner Nair convened a review meeting with zonal deputy commissioners and regional officers. He warned that PMC would conduct regular inspections across the city and that any future instances of negligence, incomplete work, or false reporting could result in the immediate suspension of responsible officials.

He also directed all departments to expedite pending pre-monsoon works and ensure their timely completion before the onset of heavy rainfall.
According to PMC’s review, approximately 77 per cent of the scheduled pre-monsoon works have been completed so far. Officials have been instructed to deploy additional manpower and machinery to complete the remaining works on priority.

PMC has further announced that physical inspections of drains, culverts, and stormwater infrastructure will be intensified from next week to assess both the quality and progress of work on the ground.
