Pune: PMRDA Clears Big Infra Push to Ease Hinjawadi Traffic, Cut Accident Risks
Pimpri-Chinchwad, 27th November 2025: Responding to a worrying surge in road accidents across the Hinjawadi–Wakad IT belt, where more than 39 fatalities have been reported this year, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has initiated an aggressive action plan to improve road safety and traffic management.
A high-level review meeting was held at PMRDA’s Akurdi office, bringing together officials from PMRDA, Pimpri-Chinchwad Police, MIDC, NHAI, the Revenue Department, and other key agencies. Representatives of resident welfare groups and IT professionals also attended, underscoring the urgency felt by the community.
Pothole-Free Roads Ordered by December 5:
PMRDA Commissioner Dr. Yogesh Mhase issued a strict directive to all agencies to ensure that every road under their jurisdiction is made pothole-free by December 5. Citing deteriorating road conditions as a major contributor to accidents in the region, he stressed that accountability would be enforced without exception.
Lending weight to the directive, Additional Commissioner of Police Sarang Awad warned that criminal cases would be filed against officials if any fatality is traced to a pothole. The move introduces strong criminal liability for civic negligence and aims to eliminate delays in road repair work.
Residents and daily commuters voiced concerns during the meeting.
Sachin Londhe, petitioner behind the Unclog Hinjawadi IT Park campaign, said the situation has created an atmosphere of fear for thousands of employees travelling through the corridor every day. He added that the government’s new measures offer “much-needed hope for safer and smoother travel.”
Major Infrastructure Upgrades on the Way
To address severe traffic congestion—another major factor behind road mishaps—PMRDA finalised several key interventions:
-Hinjawadi Phase-1 to Phase-3 Elevated Corridor: MIDC will expedite land acquisition for the new elevated route on the Hinjawadi–Pirangut–Ghotawade State Highway.
-Metro Line-3 Road Restoration: The Hinjawadi Metro concessionaire has been instructed to fill potholes along construction stretches and fully restore damaged roads before handing them back to MIDC.
-Bhugaon Bypass: Land acquisition will be completed soon; NHAI is set to issue the work order next week.
-Bypass Roads at Wagholi & Shikrapur: New parallel routes are planned to reduce traffic bottlenecks.
-Underpasses & Service Roads: To be developed along key sections of the Pune–Mumbai Bypass and national highways.
-RTO Enforcement: Action ordered against dust-emitting RMC plants, negligent construction activity, and unsafe dumper operations.
PMRDA will fund the installation of CCTV cameras across Hinjawadi to support real-time traffic management and aid accident investigations.
A Strong Push for Road Safety
The latest directives mark one of the region’s most coordinated efforts yet to curb accidents and streamline traffic movement. With clear deadlines and strict accountability mechanisms, authorities aim to turn the Hinjawadi–Wakad IT corridor into a safer, more reliable commuting zone in the coming weeks.
