Mumbai/Pune, 14th June 2023: In a recent Cabinet meeting chaired by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, a decision was made to extend the deadline for the draft development plans to the planning authorities. As part of this decision, an amendment will be made to Section 26(1) of the Maharashtra Regional Planning and Town Planning Act-1966, including the Municipal Corporation or Planning Authority, and efforts will be made to promulgate the ordinance.

Currently, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is engaged in the process of preparing the development plan for the Pune Metropolitan Region. With a population of 70 lakh and an area spanning 6,900 square kilometers, the metropolitan region is undergoing significant growth. Unlike other city councils, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority previously had a six-month period for extending the draft development plan.

Considering that other cities in the state, such as Nashik, Aurangabad, Kolhapur, and Nagpur, also have development authorities that may face time constraints when preparing development plans for their respective metropolises, it was decided to grant an additional year to meet the deadline for the development plan.

This extension will allow for more comprehensive and thoughtful planning, taking into account the rapid urbanization and development occurring within the Pune Metropolitan Region. It will provide ample time for thorough research, consultations, and the incorporation of diverse stakeholder feedback into the development plan.
