Pune Police Ban Sharing Ganesh Visarjan Photos, Videos to Maintain Public Harmony
Pune, 5th September 2025: The Pune Police have issued a directive prohibiting the filming and circulation of Ganesh idol immersion visuals from September 4 to 15 under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The order is aimed at preserving communal harmony and preventing any public disturbances during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival.
“The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that religious sentiments are not hurt and that peace is maintained during the Visarjan processions,” said a senior Pune Police official. Authorities have warned that anyone violating the directive could face action under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which governs criminal offences.
The prohibition covers videos, photographs, and any other media showing idol immersions in rivers, lakes, or artificial tanks. Police stressed that sharing such content without permission could lead to unrest and disrupt public order.
Ganesh Chaturthi, which began on August 27, is a ten-day festival culminating on Anant Chaturdashi, September 6. On this day, devotees immerse idols of Lord Ganesha in water as part of traditional rituals. While many families perform the Visarjan on the final day, some observe the ritual on the third, fifth, or seventh day of the festival.
