Pune Police Developing Anonymous Reporting App to Tackle Rising Drug Menace
Pune, 24th March 2026: In a significant initiative to combat the growing problem of drug trafficking and consumption, the Pune Police is developing a citizen-centric mobile application that will enable residents to anonymously report narcotics-related activities, ensuring complete confidentiality.
Senior officials said the application, currently under development, will allow users to upload photographs, videos, and precise location details of suspected drug-related activities. The information will be transmitted directly to the police control room, enabling prompt action. Importantly, the identity of the informant will remain fully concealed, even from officers handling the case.
The move comes amid growing concerns over the spread of drugs across Pune, particularly among young people. Authorities have observed that narcotics are no longer confined to specific areas, with usage reported across both economically weaker sections and affluent neighbourhoods. In some cases, illegal drug manufacturing units have also been detected in industrial areas.
The application, which will function on lines similar to platforms used for reporting traffic violations, will initially be implemented on a pilot basis by the Crime Branch. Depending on its effectiveness, it may later be expanded across the city.
Alongside this digital initiative, police are planning to strengthen on-ground enforcement. Currently, two anti-narcotics squads operate under the Crime Branch, but officials are considering establishing dedicated anti-drug units at the police station level. As part of the initial phase, such units are likely to be introduced in 10 to 12 police stations before a wider rollout.
The department is also seeking support from elected representatives to intensify its anti-drug campaign. During a recent meeting chaired by Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, corporators were urged to collaborate in addressing the issue.
Reiterating the seriousness of the challenge, Commissioner Kumar said that curbing drug-related activities remains a top priority and called on citizens to actively contribute to making Pune safer.
