Pune Police Use Breathalyzer Machines During New Year After Covid, Action Against 121 For Drink Driving
Pune, 1st January 2023: For the first time after Corona, the people of Pune welcomed the new year with great enthusiasm without restrictions. This year, for the first time after the epidemic, the police used breathalyzer machines for drunk and drive operations.
In 2020, 460 people were charged with drunk driving. In 2021, the action was taken against 132 people. This time police had put up check points at 27 places and action was taken against 121 persons for driving under the influence of alcohol between December 31, 2022 and 1st January 2023.
Meanwhile, as per the appeal of the police, it was seen that the citizens welcomed the New Year with a show of discipline.
Pune residents were urged to celebrate the new year with patience and joy. Strict security was deployed throughout the city. In particular, priority was given to preventing the molestation of women, controlling the crowd, and taking action against gangs taking advantage of the crowd.
Women Squad, Damini Squad, and Crime Branch squads, along with plainclothes personnel, performed their duty well to maintain law and order at various places. Staff officers of the traffic department were seen on duty till 2 am to keep the traffic flowing between the central city and the suburbs.
Last year, due to the outbreak of corona infection, the breath analyzer machine was not used by the traffic police to take action against drunk drivers. This year, however, emphasis was placed on screening through breathalyzer machines during the checking. Therefore, punitive action was taken on a large scale.
“While welcoming the new year, the citizens have appreciated and paid heed to the appeal of the Pune Police. They complied with the rules and cooperated with the police and traffic personnel,” said Vijayakumar Magar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic Branch.
