Pune: Principal Of PCMC-Run School Canes Students For Celebrating Teacher’s Birthday
Pimpri, 19th December 2022: A principal from a Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC)-run secondary school in Wakad, AV Unavane, caned some students from class nine for celebrating a teacher’s birthday. A student suffered a fractured finger due to a severe beating. Following the incident, the principal forced the parents of the students to provide their thumb impressions and not complain to officials.
A student from the school explained that one of their favourite teachers had their birthday on 5th December. Without telling the teacher or the administration, students chipped together to buy a cake. The teacher was going to receive a surprise from us. All they wanted to do was cut the cake. But several pupils enthusiastically applauded and praised the teacher, alerting the principal and other instructors. Later, class nine students were summoned to principal AV Unavane’s cabin and given the cane. The incident resulted in a finger fracture for one of them. The entire class was terrified by this. Later, the principal coerced some parents into writing confirmation that there would be no complaint made about the punishment. Another student explained that the students did not understand what their fault was as they had celebrated another teacher’s birthday last month, but no objection or action was made then.
A student from the class claimed that the old teachers of the school are not fond of the new ones, creating an unsaid rivalry and distinction. The student alleged that no complaints were made last month when the birthday of an old teacher was celebrated.
Meanwhile, the principal has stated that disciplinary action was taken as students were already told that birthday celebrations were not allowed. He further said that no one has made a complaint.
The PCMC’s Education Administration Officer has stated that they are looking into the matter.
